Cri-du-chat syndrome result from a deletion in the DNA molecule that makes up a chromosome. In most cases, this chromosome break will occur in the developing egg or sperm. When this gamete is fertilized, the child will develop cri-du-chat syndrome. The parents, however, do not have the break themselves in any of their other cells. In fact, the break is usually such a rare and random event that it is very unlikely to happen again if the parent has another child. Thus affected people typically have no history of the disorder in their family. Nevertheless, it is possible for a child to inherit a broken chromosome from a parent who also had the disorder. About 10 percent of individuals with Cri-du-chat syndrome will inherit the chromosome abnormality from an unaffected parent. In these cases, the parent carries a chromosomal rearrangement called a balanced translocation, in which no genetic material is gained or lost. Balanced translocations usually do not cause any health problems; however, they can become unbalanced as they are passed to the next generation. Children who inherit an unbalanced translocation can have a chromosomal rearrangement with extra or missing genetic material. Individuals with cri-du-chat syndrome who inherit an unbalanced translocation are missing genetic material from the short arm of chromosome 5, which results in the intellectual disability and health problems characteristic of this disorder. It is estimated that most  cri-du-chat syndrome  cases are the result of de novo deletions (about 80%), some derive from a familial rearrangement (12%), and only a few show other rare cytogenetic aberrations, such as mosaicism (3%), rings (2.4%), and de novo translocations (3%). Gene(s) responsible or implicated in the disorder Cri-du-chat syndrome is quite a rare disorder. It was first identified by the geneticist Jerome Lejeune in 1963 who also discovered the genetic abnormality that causes Down syndrome. Cri-du-chat syndrome is the result of a genetic deletion on chromosome 5. It is believed that this disorder is the result of a faulty mechanism during the development of the egg or sperm. Curiously, in 80 percent of the cases, the chromosome carrying the deletion comes from the fathers sperm rather than the mothers egg. When deletions occur during the formation of an egg or sperm, it is caused by unequal recombination during meiosis. Recombination normally occurs between pairs of chromosomes during meiosis while they are lined up at the metaphase plate. If the pairs of chromosomes dont line up correctly, or if the chromosome breaks arent repaired properly, the structure of the chromosome can be altered. When unequal recombination occurs at this location on chromosome 5, it causes cri-du-chat syndrome. Generally, (80-85%) are due to sporadic de novo deletion of 5p (15.3 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬  Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ 15.2). Approximately 10-15% of cases are the result of the unequal segregation of the parental translocation in which the 5p monosomy is often accompanied by a trisomic portion of the genome. The phenotypes in these individuals may be more severe than in those with isolated monosomy of 5p because of this additional trisomic portion of the genome. In most cases they involve terminal deletions with 30-60% loss of 5p material. Fewer than 10% of patients have other rare cytogenetic aberrations (eg, interstitial deletions, mosaicisms, rings and de novo translocations).   A minority of cases result from one parent carrying a rearrangement of chromosome 5 called a translocation and passing this on to the baby. The occurrence of mosaicism is also a very rare finding, with frequency estimated at about 3% of patients. Clinical features Babies with cri-du-chat usually are small at birth, and may have respiratory problems. Often, the larynx doesnt develop correctly, which causes the signature cat-like cry. The characteristic cry is perceptually and acoustically similar to the mewing of kittens. This unusual cry is due to both structural abnormalities of the larynx laryngeal hypoplasia and to CNS dysfunction. The appearance of the laryngeal may be normal or may exhibit a range of anatomical abnormalities such as floppy epiglottis, small larynx, and asymmetric vocal cords. However, the cause of this characteristic cry cannot entirely be ascribed to the larynx. It seems that a problem in the brain development most likely at the cranial base play a role in the development of the signature cry of the syndrome. This cat like cry is not a permanent feature, indeed, it usually disappears over time. Furthermore, distinctive external features are generally present too. Patients may have microcephaly, an unusually round face, widely set eyes, a small chin, folds of skin over the eyes, and a small bridge of the nose. Written for The Washington Post in America in 1954 and later published in the British newspaper The Guardian Weekly on April 1, 1984. The article is about how the murderer James David Autry wants his execution to be on the television and Goodman asks questions to whether or not it is okay to show the spectators that kind of violent spectacular and how it will affect them.Obviously this article was meant to create a debate when it was published those many years after in Britain. If we take a look at the different executions that occur in the article, then we get a pretty good view of how the articles main interest and opinion is negative and wants to show that it has done nothing but bring out the bad in people. Watt Espy who is an historian of capital punishment at the University of Alabama Law Center believes and has heard that violence only brings more violen ce – â€Å"[†¦] has collected tales of the violence begat by violence† (p. ll. 1-2). He gives an example of how the execution of two men in Attling, Georgia. leads to a fight between the spectators and ends with a man being killed. He states – â€Å"This was not unique† (p. 2 l. 3). By that he tells us that it was not uncommon at that time to have consequences like that happen during an execution. The people at that time didn’t handle the rush of the spectacle and of the â€Å"show† very well. It got to them and the influence of the bad situation would spread and affect the spectators.Another example of an execution giving by Goodman is when she talks about one of the last time that the public could watch an execution in America. It was August 26, 1936 that Raine Bethea was hung in front of a crowd of 10,000 people in Owensboro, Kentucky. Goodman describe the execution before and after, like it was some kind of concert or entertainment show that the spectators were about to watch. â€Å"Through the early hours of that day, â€Å"Hawkers squeezed their way through the crowd selling popcorn and hot dogs. Telephone poles and trees were festooned with spectators†. (p. 1 ll. 12-13) It reminds me of a circus, where you can buy hot dogs or an outdoor movie theater with popcorn, also Goodman writes that a vivid account by Time Magazine showed that the night before the execution of Bethea, the spectators had gone to hanging parties and drinking like the execution was something to look forward to. â€Å"By 5 o’clock, â€Å"the crowd grew impatient, began to yip, â€Å"Let’s go, bring him out†. † (p. 1 l. 14) Again the crowd shows the influence of what was going on. The bad situation had a violent effect on them.It made them seem and act almost crazy by the things Goodman describes – â€Å"At 5. 28 there was a swish, a snap. † Soon the spectators crowded in and â€Å"eager hands clawed at the black death cloth†¦ The lucky ones stuffed the bits of black cloth in their pockets†. † (p. 1 ll. 16-17) The quote says that â€Å"the lucky ones† got to go home with a piece of clothing from Bethea after he was dead, as proof that they had witnessed the execution. The way that the reaction to Bethea’s execution gets described is very harsh and cynical, like the spectators had forgotten their humanity and compassion.It is an example like this that makes Goodman bring it up. It shows how wrong it is and what impact seeing an execution can have on people. She sees no reason for bringing such a spectacle up again. For example this quote says that if we go back to the way it was back then it would most likely result in videos of the state-approved murders – â€Å"As we resume the march of state-approved murder, it seems likely that television reporters will soon be allowed to bring tools of their trade – cameras – into the death chamber, the way print reporters bring pencils† (p. ll. 21-13) â€Å"Indeed, if others have their way, we may yet tune in on death. Live at Five. We may enter the death chamber through the living room. Once again we may become spectators at executions† (p. 1 ll. 5-7) – Again when she writes â€Å"once again† she refers to it as going around 50 years back in time to when it was executions on the streets. She also uses irony with the â€Å"live at five† because it makes it sound like it was any other television show and that we could watch death â€Å"through the living room†, that doesn’t sound very appealing.By saying things like that she uses the irony to make people think about what this actually means, which is watching another human die as â€Å"entertainment† on the television in your own living room. In the article Goodman also write about arguments for and against showing executions on televisions, but not her own arguments though. â€Å"Some who favour capital punishment as a deterrent to crime are convinced that watching an execution would scare criminals straight. Some who oppose capital punishment believe that the sight would enrage the public† (p. 1 ll. 3-25) as the quote says an argument for, could be to scare the criminals so they could see what could happen to them. And an argument against could be that it would only have a bad effect on the public. â€Å"There’s no scientific way to prove in advance the effect of televised executions on crime [†¦ ] but we do know something about the effect on the â€Å"audience†. We do know something about spectators from the old days† (p. 2 l. 12, ll. 13-14) – Goodman knows that there is no way to prove what effect it would bring but she see no reason to try and test it. The descriptions of his death were graphic enough† (p. 1 l. 1) – When writing about Autry, Goodman clearly states her op inion towards the subject which if the executions should be on television or not. Like the descriptions of how Autry’s execution went in details weren’t enough? She is saying that it should be enough. That showing it on television would be over doing it. Hearing about how someone takes a man’s life on purpose would be hard enough but to actually see it happening with your own eyes would be horrifying.

Williams Emmons is three years older than Candace, but he still holds his choir leader position. If they complain that her voice has worsened, Williams's voice logically must have the same situation as her. However, Emmons is not dismissed and remain his choirmaster position. The minister just like Candace also serves at the church for forty years. He hesitates of his speech and could not keep the freshness for his sermons. He still can stay in the church and continue his duties since nobody asks him to leave his position and gives him a photograph album. Candace indicates that all of them have the same position in the church and change according to age, but the congregation chooses to dismiss her as she is a woman. Candace's bitterness, pain, and conflict become more intense due to the betrayal of people around her. A betrayal of Emmons who had sung duets and had walked Candace home after rehearsals in Saturday night when he said â€Å"a most outrageous proceeding† for Candace action. He critics her voice with Alma and supports the dismissal. Even Candace's nephew, Wilson Ford, threats to throw her organ out of the window if she continues to disturb Alma's solo. He does not express any sympathy or even gently discuss her grief. She also feels hurt and betrayed by members of the choir since they celebrate a surprise party for her and leave a photograph album with the letter informing her dismissal from the choir. However, the way that Candace responses and against to conflict is full of anger, foolishness, disregard, and arrogance. She says that the member of the church pretends to be a Christian; however, she also goes against what the church teaches. She uses photograph album as a footstool, disturbs Alma's solo, refuses to pray â€Å"‘I don't see any use prayin' about it,' said she. ‘I don't think the Lord's got much to do with it, anyhow'† and challenge other people to stop her † I'd like to see anybody stop me.† Besides that, the story carries the message of kindness and forgiveness. At the end of the story, Candace forgives to all people who have wronged her and also ask for the forgiveness from those people. She apologizes to the minister, reconciles with Alma, and forgive Wilson.

Not for prefect attendance, outstanding test scores, or overachieving students which all schools thrive to have their school’s name known for. We know it as â€Å"The Columbine School Shooting.† Wednesday morning on April 21 in 1999 was flooded with the headlines of two senior boys bring weapons onto their campus and killing their classmates. The name s of the two shooters became a household name. Dylan Bennet Klebold is one of the shooters at Columbine High School yet if he did not cross path with Eric Harris, not been rejected from his peers, and been able to handle his depression then perhaps Dylan would not have been involved. Dylan Klebold was only one of the shooters that Tuesday April 20, 1999. Eric David Harris is the other shooter and you can not say one name without saying the other. Together they have done something America was not ready to comprehend and to this day what lead the boys to the decision is not certain. What is know is the planning to the terrible day and other events that may be linked to their decisions. â€Å"There are several police reports that show a recent history of trouble Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were responsible for prior to the shootings at Columbine; reports of threats and violence that were swept under the rug by the local law enforcement, kept hidden for months after the tragedy (Shepard).† Both Dylan and Eric rode the same bus and attend the same middle school with one other friend Nathan Dykeman. The boys would be involved with school and were interested in video production. The boys made countless videos of themselves some of which were used to study their behavior. Video showed the boys in the woods firing hand guns, wearing trench coats in one project called ‘Hitman for Hire’, talking violently to the camera about the acts they would do to bullies, and lastly videos from Eric’s basement which have not been fully release to the public. Yet not being 18 to purchase guns themselves, Dylan had a friend who would also be his prom date, Robyn Anderson, bought the guns for them. Eric and Dylan take turns shooting the guns and practice their aim. The ‘Hitman for Hire’ was a project were the Eric and Dylan were hire by students who have been bullied at their school as they saw their role as â€Å"the men in black that geeks, outcasts, nerds, and other picked-on souls could turn to in order to take care of bullies who were harassing them and making their lives hell. In the film, Dylan and Eric run around protecting the weak (Shepard).† The project’s video is chilling to watch due to the day the shooting happened the boys wear black trench coats as in the video and walked the halls with guns looking for victims to shoot. Some suggest Eric and Dylan were rehearsing for what they called ‘judgement day’. From all the videos Eric and Dylan made the basement videos have yet to be completely released to the public. The day of the attack about 30 minutes before, Eric and Dylan made their last video which they both take a turn saying goodbye, Dylan had a message for his mother, â€Å"Hey mom. Gotta go. Its about a half an hour before our little judgment day. I just wanted to apologize to you guys for any crap this might instigate as far as (inaudible) or something. Dylan’s mother, Susan Klebold, was not aware of the videos her son was making and st ated, â€Å"Dylan was a gentle, sensible kid. No one in our family had ever owned a gun. How in the world could he be part of something like this (I Will Never Know Why P.1)?† His mother knew of the depression he faced, the friendship with Eric, but was she aware of how depressed he truly was which may have needed assisted from doctors, how toxic Eric was to Dylan, and the anger from the rejection from others he held inside. Dylan kept a journey from 1997 to 1999, his writing consisting of his thoughts and hatred for his life, talking about a girl he loves which transforms his writing almost to poetry, and to dark desires of killing, bombing the school, and the schedule of April 20. Dylan was aware of being different from his classmates. As a teenager growing up and trying to understand himself he knew his thoughts were not the same as his classmates. â€Å"I know that i am different, yet i am afraid to tell the society. The possible abandonment, persecution is not something I want to face, yet it is so primitive to me,† this side of Dylan seems to feel helpless as if he has already chosen his fate (Shepard). He struggles with his emotions as read in his journal at times he talks about his loneliness and wanting to reach out to people, then to anger of not being welcome, and then spends briefly of his unrequited love but ult imately Dylan wanted to be accepted. â€Å"I will be free one day, in the land of purity my happiness, I will have a love, someone who is me in a way. Someday Possibly thru this life, maybe another, but it will happen,† in his journal Dylan is seeking accept perhaps even help. After 19 years the question if Dylan would be been on antidepressants could have changed the outcome of that day? Dylan was not quiet about his desire of killing, he wrote an essay on it which his teacher found unappreciated and gave it to the counselor to evaluated it. Yet thing came from it. Dylan’s mother notices her son behaving differently yet passed it as, â€Å"Dylan was just being a typical teenager (Dawson).†Ã‚   With the journals and videos psychologist and FBI profilers stated yet neither were formally diagnosed, â€Å"Dylan likely suffered from severe depression and suicidal thoughts, while Eric was likely a psychopath (Dawson).† Both dealt with mental issues yet it was too late it help. Eric Harris was a big influence on Dylan, many students stating that Dylan was a follower and Eric was a leader. Eric’s parents never spoke or were interviewed about what their son have done. Eric would be shown on the media of killing the most between himself and Dylan, was Eric the mastermind of that day which Dylan called ‘judgement day’? Its simply really Dylan wanted to die, and Eric wanted to kill. Eric in Dylan’s life was the approximating cause to his involvement on April 20, 1999. Dylan dealt with depression and perhaps if the influence of Eric caused him to think that others should suffer for his sad life. In Dylan’s journey he talks about the jocks and the girls who ignored him, Eric could have known to make history of killing at his high school he would need help and Dylan was easily influenced. In the end Dylan suffer in life and in death, when Dylan shot himself was not enough to kill him instantly but to slowly have him drown in his ow n blood whereas a shot gun in the mouth cause Eric no pain.
